Journey to LGBTQ-influenced places in Delphi, Naples, Paris, Munich, Boston, New York, and beyond. We will discuss various historical artwork and relics that relate to LGBTQ history, including a clay ball, statues, paintings, frescos, photos, a grave, and a country house. Along the way, you will hear about people on many points of the LGBTQ+ spectrum, from different racial backgrounds and nationalities, bridging other cultures across centuries.
Throughout the tour, Professor Lear will explain the symbolism used in art to communicate hidden messages, including those about homosexual identity. Discover, see, and learn about the following :
• The only, fully preserved ancient Greek fresco (and the gay love scene it represents)
• The “Uncle Sam” of ancient Athens
• A monument to a military regiment of gay couples
• The temple to a Roman Emperor’s dead gay lover
• Caravaggio's coded messages in his paintings that would have engaged his patrons
• The most famous gender-queer person of the 18th century
• The Lesbian love story that is prominent (but hidden) in Central Park.
This talk shares the most popular topics and stories from Professor Lear’s extensive studies of LGBTQ art and history. At the end of the tour, you will leave with a better understanding of homosexuality throughout the ages and many cultures.
